Underrated Beaches in Mykonos

The cosmopolitan island of Mykonos is one of the most popular summer Greek hotspots. The crystal clear waters of the Aegean Sea surround some of the most gorgeous beaches in all of Greece.

During the high season, the island is often times flooded with tourists and it tarnishes the relaxing sounds of the water crashing against the shore.

The ultimate way to experience isolation on this island paradise is to avoid summer altogether and come during low season. For those who are able to withstand the dip in temperature, traveling to Mykonos in the offseason is a fabulous way to witness stunning seaside views without the brutal influx of visitors.

Some travelers would rather work on their tan under the summer Greek sun and that is perfectly okay.

If you decide to take a trip to Mykonos during high season and want to escape the typical tourist traps, then check out these recommended beaches that offer equal amounts of turqoise beauty with far less people.

Fokos Beach

Far away from the cruise ships and boutique shops, a more tranquil Mykonos beach awaits. Fokos Beach will require a bit of a drive to reach and you will need to rent a car. Buses that haul tourists will not venture there and good luck finding a taxi.

Once you make the scenic drive to the untamed northeast side of the island, you will fall in love with its natural beauty. The winding curves and hills of the unpaved road create an epic journey to reach the secluded beach.

You will feel a more private, local vibe as only one taverna services beachgoers under the bright Mykonos sun. Lay your towel out for a tan, search for shells beneath the cliffs, or go for a swim at this unforgettable Mykonian beach.

Agios Sostis

Another beach situated along the northern coast of the island, Agios Sostis offers incredible views of the rugged landscape overlooking the serene waters nestled inside a cove. Even if you have only three days in Mykonos, you shouldn’t miss Agios Sostis.

It will be a struggle to find the typical amenities such as beach chairs and umbrellas, but that’s what makes this idyllic beach so wonderful. Sprawl out on the sand and relax without a care in the world.

Agios Sostis is roughly a 15-20 minute drive northeast of Mykonos Town. Unless you don’t mind trekking it on foot, you will need to rent a car or scooter to reach the beach. The drive is fairly easy, but the roads to reach the beach are not in the best condition.

Simply follow the signs to Agios Sostis as the twisting roads take you uphill. Parking is nonexistent so be careful where you leave your vehicle on the hill before you hike the short path to this Aegean oasis.

Kapari Beach

In my biased opinion, Kapari Beach is the most gorgeous beach in Mykonos. Located on the western side of the island, this small and rocky beach provides mind-blowing coastal scenery. The transparent waters are as clear as any on the island and its limited stretch of sand surrounded by immense stones provide wonderful seclusion.

From this vantage point on Mykonos, you can see the smaller island of Delos in the distance which was one of the most important sites in the ancient Greek world.

The easiest way to reach the beach is to get off the nearest bus stop and hike the road until you reach the stone-laced path to climb down to the sand. A scooter could get you there okay but leave the car at the hotel as there is no parking lot in sight.
